Samuli KyllÖnen
In first place, a stunning experimental portrait, done entirely on black and white film. The artist appears to have used a multi exposure technique to enrich a figure onto a silhouette. The image itself is immediately intriguing to the eye, with central framing and a perfect gradient of light, shadow and grain. This image represents the purity of experimentation and authenticity within camera grounds.
1st Place
suzanne pedersen
Second place see’s Suzanne Pedersen, with a unique concept of mystery and story telling in a field. Centrally composed, a door is seen in the middle of a field, evoking a mysterious story… What could be on the other side, where does this door lead to? Being in the middle of nowhere amplifies the eeriness and randomness to this door, while the stark contrast adds even more drama to this story. It could very well be a cover to a horror movie.
2nd Place
Merinda boekhoudt
A stark self portrait earns 3rd place, with a gritty and grotesque texture, enabling this story to seem even darker than it seems. The face appearing from the right and looking ahead, lets the viewer feel a point of view from the subject, as if there is great suffering from within, a battle of hardship and pain. Merinda is known to document her own emotions with self portraits and does so very well here with this evocative self portrait.
